Fishing Lassen

Lassen’s Rivers, Creeks, and Lakes provide world-class fishing


  • Mill Creek -  From the Lassen National Park boundary downstream to the U.S. Geological Survey gauging station cable crossing at the mouth of Mill Creek Canyon.

    • Only artificial lures with barbless hooks may be used

    • 2 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead*, 4 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead* in possession

    • Directions to Mill Creek

      • Little Hole-in-the-Ground – (0.7 miles) From the resort, head west (left) on 172 for 0.3 mi, turn right on the dirt road and travel 0.1 mi, stay left at the fork for 0.3 mi

      • Hole-in-the-ground Campground – (3.6 miles) From the resort, head west (left) on 172 for 0.3 mi, turn right on the dirt road and travel 0.1 mi, turn right and travel 2.6 mi, turn left and travel 0.6 mi 

      • Camp Tehama – (2 miles) From the resort, head east (right) on 172

      • From Resort Campsite #10, follow the Boy Scout trail down the steep path to the creek 

  • Deer Creek - Deer Creek flows from meadows to riffles and miniature white water stretches. It has many pools and log jams with steep banks. Watch for poison oak and rattlesnakes. Located in scenic mixed forests and meadows that are stunning when the leaves turn in the fall.

  • From 250 feet below Upper Deer Creek Falls and fishway (located 1.5 miles upstream from Potato Patch Campground) downstream 31 miles to U.S. Geological Survey gauging station cable crossing at the mouth of Deer Creek Canyon

  • Only artificial lures with barbless hooks may be used

  • 2 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead*, 4 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead* in possession

  • Elam Creek Campground – Day Use Area 19 min (15.0 miles)

    • Directions

      • Head east on CA-172 E - 3.1 mi

      • Turn right onto CA-36 E/CA-89 S - 8.6 mi

      • Turn right onto CA-32 W - 3.2 mi

  • Battle Creek - A-Line - This section of Battle Creek flows through a mixed forest and meadow area. There are no facilities at the "A" Line site. 

    • From 250 feet upstream from the Coleman Fish Hatchery upstream to Angel Falls (near Mineral) on the South Fork and to Ponderosa Way Bridge on the North Fork.

    • Stocked

    • Only artificial lures with barbless hooks may be used

    • 2 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead*, 4 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead* in possession

      • Directions

        • Drive southwest on CA-172 W toward Mineral - 5.7 mi

        • Turn left onto CA-36 W - 4.1 mi

        • Right-hand side of the road

        • Park by the Yellow Gate – DO NOT drive down the road if the gate is open

  • Hat Creek - Hat Creek features rocky pools and riffles in steep, forested terrain. Stream flows N, from Lassen National Park

    • From Lake Britton upstream to Baum Lake, exclusive of the concrete Hat No. 2 intake canal between Baum Lake and the Hat No. 2 Powerhouse.

    • Stocked

    • Minimum size limit: 18 inches total length. Only artificial lures with barbless hooks may be used

    • 2 trout

      • Location

        • Runs along Hwy 44 and 89 N

  • Lake Almanor - Located in an area that is surrounded by forest with many residences. Wind can create a hazard due to the open water. Year-round fishing but may freeze over in Winter. 

    • 5 trout per day. 10 trout in possession.
