Hiking in Mill Creek and beyond

Bag every peak in Lassen or simply just take a walk; there's something for everyone around every bend.


  • National Forest

    • Mill Creek Snowmobile Trail (Adventure Awaits Trail)

      • Length: 1.2 miles (loop)

      • Elevation gain: 61’

      • Elevation range: 4514-4585

      • Directions: From the resort, head west (left) on 172 for 0.3 mi, turn left on the dirt road.  Walk approximately 0.1 mi and turn left onto the dirt trail.  Follow the Orange arrows on the trees until reaching the property line of the Resort Campground.  Follow the campground road back to 172, turn left to get back to the Restaurant

    • Spencer Meadow Loop

      • Length:  13.0 miles (semi-loop)

      • Elevation gain:  2050'

      • Elevation range:  4900-6600'

      • Directions: From Mill Creek Resort, turn right on Hwy 172 toward Hwy 36E (3.1miles).  Right turn on Hwy 36E, drive 1.4 miles to the trailhead on the left side of the Hwy.

    • Heart Lake

      • Length:  4.8 miles

      • Elevation gain:  1000'

      • Elevation range:  5700-6700'

      • Directions: From Highway 36 (across from Battle Creek Campground), take unpaved FS 17 road (30N17) approximately 9.5 miles to the trailhead on the right of the road.

    • Subway Cave   

      •  Explore the underground world of a lava tube on this self-guided trail. 

      • The cave is completely dark, so don't forget to bring a flashlight.  The floor is rough and jagged so wear sturdy shoes. A light jacket will ward off the chill as the cave remains a cool 46 degrees F.  Neither hardhats nor crawling are required!

      • Directions: Located North of Lassen N.P. From Mill Creek Resort, turn right on CA- 172 toward Hwy 36E (3.1miles).  Turn Left onto Hwy 36E/89N (3.6 miles). Right turn onto CA-89 N (34.0 miles).  Turn right onto CA-44 E/CA-89 N (14.0 miles).  After the two highways split, the trailhead parking lot is ¼ mile past the junction on the right of 89N (across from Cave Campground).

    • Spattercone Nature Trail   

      • Self-guided interpretive trail through the origin of the Hat Creek Lava Flow.  See spatter cones, craters, and a beautiful view of the Hat Creek Valley.

      • Length: 1.6 mile (semi-loop)

      • Elevation gain: 215’

      • Elevation range: 4,685’-4,470’

      • Directions: Located North of Lassen N.P.* From Mill Creek Resort, turn right on CA- 172 toward Hwy 36E (3.1miles).  Turn Left onto Hwy 36E/89N (3.6 miles). Right turn onto CA-89 N (34.0 miles).  Turn right onto CA-44 E/CA-89 N (12.0 miles). Trailhead parking lot is on the right of the highway.

Hiking in Lassen Volcanic National Park

explore 150 miles of trails within the park

  • Bumpass Hell: 33 minutes from Mill Creek Resort: Moderate 3-mile round trip hike to see the largest geothermal area in the park. It can be extremely overcrowded during certain times of the year. Depending on the time of day, it may also be impossible to get a parking spot.

  • Terminal Geyser: 55 minutes from Mill Creek Resort: Moderate 5.8-mile round trip. Add another 1.8 miles to see Boiling Springs Lake from the same trailhead.

  • Devil’s Kitchen: 45 minutes from Mill Creek Resort: Moderate 4.2 miles round trip. A less crowded trail than Bumpass Hell but just as dramatic.

    A few of our other favorite family-friendly hikes are:

  • Manzanita Lake Loop: 1 hour and 10 minutes from Mill Creek Resort. Easy 1.5 miles round trip around the lake. Great for wildflowers and bird watching.

    Devastated Area Interpretive Trail: 55 minutes from Mill Creek Resort. Easy .5 mile round trip trail and is wheelchair accessible. Learn about the recent volcanic activity of Lassen Peak.

  • Cold Boiling Lake: 45 minutes from Mill Creek Resort. Easy 1.4 miles round trip through dense forest and to a marshy meadow.
